Joy and Vic early in their marriage
Joy and Vic started their married life living in a coal shed in the backyard of her aunty
Mary's(Nennie) house in Gipps Street, Carrington.
They later moved into a proper house in Young Street, Carrington.
Next move was to 111 Jenner Parade, Hamilton South.
After marrying Joy was blessed with 7 children :
Victor, Barry, Glynis, Darrel, Graham, Neil and John
Following photo taken in 1961 before Joy and her young gang joined Vic Kearns in Perth, WA for a
"new" start after rocky times in their marriage.
Victor, Darrel, Elsie, Glynis, Graham, Barry, Henry, Neil, Joy and John
They lived at 66 Mars Street, Carlise.
The problems in the marriage continued and Joy eventually after 2 years fled with her kids back
to Newcastle, NSW.
Joy and the kids were split up for a short while with some living with her sister Fay's family at
Windale.
Vic, followed Joy back to Newcastle and after a time Joy agreed to a reconciliation with Vic.
They lived at 41 Dumaresq Street, Hamilton South.
However, Vics problems with alcohol and gambling only got worse and acts of violence on his
part put an end to the marriage for good.
Joy was left to do almost all the parenting of her 7 children with her husband Vic having serious
alcohol and gambling addictions, and her marriage ended in divorce in 1965.
On a positive note, after the divorce Vic started attending AA and managed successfully to beat
his alcohol addiction.
This photo was taken at 17 Gordon Street, Mayfield where Joy lived with her children after the
divorce.
Her parents, Henry and Elsie, living around the street at 9 Windeyer Street Mayfield, provided
wonderful backup support.
