1173 Elenaor ARMSTRONG was born about 1821 in Ireland to William Armstrong and Catherine (maiden name not known).
She married James KEARNS on 15th June 1840 at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, England. Elenaor was not a Catholic.
Speculation : Perhaps the parents did not agree to their marriage, as James was Catholic and Eleanor was not, so they made the decision to elope together across to England to Manchester where at the time it was easy to get married. Rather than return home to Ireland they decided to try their luck by emigrating to Australia.

--->marriage record

James and Eleanor arrived Sydney 12 Nov 1840 on the "Argyleshire" as bounty emigrants

Arrived Sydney 12 Nov 1840 on the "Argyleshire" as a bounty emigrant.
(Ellen Cairns on passenger records -Australian, New South Wales, Index to Bounty Immigrants, 1828-1842).

She converted to a Catholic on 2/7/1852 age 32 years. at East Maitland.

Eleanor had 5 children but sadly another 7 (4 male, 3 female) didn't survive.

Eleanor died in 1877 aged 56 years from enteric(typhoid) fever and gangrene of the foot.
BDM NSW reg #7246/1877 (death) "KEARNS ELEANOR" f-james m-eleanor district-newcastle
Note: father and mother entries obviously not correct. They are herself and husband James.

At this time, it is not known where Eleanor is burried.
If it was in Newcastle it may have been at the old Honeysuckle Cemetery in Newcastle West.

--->Honeysuckle Cemetery

Her death certificates hints that she may have been burried at Maitland but no record of this has been found. However, the undertaker is listed as W J Sloan and Sloan Undertakers existed in East Maitland at the time of her death.
